Fishtail Braid Tutorial

Last weekend I posted a photo on my Instagram page of me with a fishtail braid. I had lots of people both on IG and in real life request a tutorial so I decided to go for it. A fishtail braid is really simple once you get the hang of it. It's important not to overthink it, and my trick is to start with a loose pony (watch the video for details!). I love styles like this for second day hair - gives me something interesting to do with it besides a plain ol' topknot.

I use a little dry shampoo (I use the $5 drugstore kind; I've tried the expensive salon brands and I didn't notice much of a difference) before I get started. You could also tease your hair at the crown if you want extra volume. Finally - I didn't say this in the video, but I usually add a bobby pin or two at the back of my neck to keep the hair in place once the braid is done. This helps especially if you style your braid a little looser.
